About landscape pictures
Landscape pictures are layered from top to bottom. The sky is divided into three to five horizontal bands, a sun hangs among puffy clouds, and below them three to six rolling hills overlap one another, each one in its own color. Simple triangular trees stand on the hills, and detailed variations add more trees and more layers.
Why distant hills look pale
Painters have long used a trick called atmospheric or aerial perspective: things far away look lighter, softer and often bluer, because there is more air between you and them. The banded sky and stacked hills in these pictures follow the same idea in a simplified way, so each overlapping layer reads as a step further into the distance, even though every shape is flat.
Big bands, small trees
Wide sky bands and broad hills are some of the largest areas in any daubday picture, which makes landscapes a good choice when you want a relaxed session or are just getting used to the controls. The trees and the edges of the clouds are where the small areas hide, and on far hills the trees can be tiny. If you are new to the app, the how-to-play guide explains every control.
Coloring tips
- 1Start with the wide sky bands and hills for fast progress, then zoom in for the triangular trees.
- 2Trees on distant hills may not show numbers until you zoom in, so pinch closer along each ridge.
- 3On a touchscreen, select the tree color, zoom in and drag from one tree along the ridge to paint matching trees.
