Pictures to color
About koi pictures
Koi pictures look down into a pond. Ripple rings spread across the water and round lily pads float on the surface, while one to four koi swim among them. Each fish is built from a tail, fins, a body, three separate color patches and an eye, so even a single koi is a small puzzle of its own.
Living jewels
Koi are ornamental varieties of carp, and they are widely associated with Japan, where breeders developed many of the famous color patterns, reportedly starting in the Niigata region in the nineteenth century. Enthusiasts name varieties by their markings: kohaku, for example, is a white koi with red patches. In Korean, koi are called bidan-ingeo, which means something like "silk carp," a fitting name for fish with such smooth, bright scales.
Patches tell the story
The color patches on each fish are what make these pictures feel like koi, since the arrangement of patches is how keepers tell one fish from another. The pond, lily pads and ripples give you calm, generous areas to fill between the fish, while fins and eyes hold the small details. For more on koi and their colors, read our koi guide.
Coloring tips
- 1Each koi has three color patches on its body, so zoom in on one fish to make sure every patch is filled.
- 2Ripple rings are thin curved areas, so pinch in close where they cross lily pads to reveal hidden numbers.
- 3Eyes are tiny and easy to miss, so press Hint once the bodies are done to jump to whatever remains.
