About fruit pictures
Fruit pictures are still lifes: a bowl on a table holding three or four fruits chosen from apples, oranges, pears and grapes. Apples come with a highlight, a stem and a leaf, grapes are clusters of small circles, and a round shape on the wall behind the table balances the composition.
A painter's classic
Still life, the painting of everyday objects arranged on a table, has a long history. It flourished in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, when painters showed fruit, flowers and tableware in careful detail, and later artists such as Paul Cézanne returned again and again to apples and bowls to study form and color. A bowl of fruit makes a good subject because it combines simple round shapes with small, satisfying details.
Highlights and clusters
The highlight on an apple is a tiny area, but it is what makes the fruit look round and shiny, so it is worth finding. Grapes are usually the most detailed part of a fruit picture, since each grape is a separate circle. The table, wall and bowl are large areas that fill in a few taps. Coloring tips
- 1Grapes are clusters of small circles, so zoom in on the bunch and work through it grape by grape.
- 2The apple's highlight, stem and leaf are small separate areas, so look for them once the fruit itself is filled.
- 3Fill the table, wall and bowl first for quick progress, then save the fruit details for the end.
